Data Entry Jobs Over the Internet
August 9, 2009 – 9:45 pmThere are several websites offering data entry jobs from home. Normally, these jobs consist in submitting ads, transcribing texts, submitting articles or processing spreadsheets with some sort of information. Not all are good and some are even scams. If you want or need a second job and don’t know where to start searching, then you should follow some basic rules.

1. The tools. Data entry from home doesn’t require a high investment, but you should have everything for it before applying for a job. Public computers like those of libraries are a bad option, since you have to install your own programs every now and then. Shared computers at home are also a bad option. You’ll need your own computer, since you don’t know when you’ll have to work on it. Your computer must have a Microsoft Office package or a free version such as Open Office installed. You must be able to open and process spreadsheets, text files and Word files. If you are into doing transcriptions, you will also need to play sound files. Besides the computer, you will also need a good Internet connection. There is also special software for transcriptions, that lets you play a sound file at a specific tempo, so you can type it.
2. Your skills. Basically, your most important skill is typing. It is important to type fast and precisely. Speed is no huge advantage is you have to make many corrections after you are done with typing.
3. Choosing the company. Some companies that promise data entry jobs also ask for an upfront fee and a monthly fee. If you want to work for a company, it is because you need money, not because you want to buy something. Ignore any company that asks you for money upfront. Serious companies that have a running business will always ask their customers for money, not their workers. Good companies with a running business also have a professional website. They place ads for finding both clients and workers. Companies that only search for workers or companies that only search for clients are not a good choice. In the former case it could be a scam to attract workers willing to pay an upfront fee. In the latter, the company doesn’t need workers, possibly because it outsources the work or already has many employees. A serious company will also have a real office and its address and telephone number on its website.
Data entry jobs are by no means the only way to make an income from home, there are some great passive income opportunities out there, you just need to know where to look.
